Tallinn: Capitale Verde d’Europa 2023

Nel gennaio 2023, la capitale dell’Estonia, Tallinn, diventerà la 13° European Green Capital con l’obiettivo di essere una città modello per la governance sostenibile

Tallinn, una delle città con il centro storico medievale meglio conservato d’Europa e patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO, ha colpito la giuria internazionale diventando European Green Capital 2023 grazie al suo approccio sistemico alla governance e agli obiettivi strategici interconnessi che riflettono le ambizioni del Green Deal europeo.

Dall’inizio del 2022, Tallinn guida la rete europea delle città che stanno attuando gli obiettivi sostenibili delle Nazioni Unite a livello locale, concentrandosi sul contrasto alla povertà, la parità di genere, l’acqua pulita, il cambiamento climatico, la sostenibilità energetica, la crescita economica e l’occupazione.

Durante l’anno in cui coprirà il ruolo di Green Capital, Tallinn mira ad avviare nuove attività sostenibili, accelerare l’eco-innovazione e la crescita verde, coinvolgendo i cittadini e le organizzazioni al fine di dare maggior spazio alle comunità locali nello sviluppo della città, trovare opportunità per sostenere e attuare l’innovazione verde, sviluppare la mobilità a zero emissioni di carbonio e stimolare i cittadini a comprendere meglio l’importanza della protezione ambientale.

La capitale dell’Estonia è diventata la prima città a introdurre il trasporto pubblico gratuito per tutti i residenti ed entro il 2035 intende offrire un trasporto pubblico libero e carbon-free, puntando a raggiungere la piena neutralità climatica entro il 2050. La sicurezza delle piste ciclabili e delle strade sarà migliorata anche con la creazione graduale di una rete di piste ciclabili sopraelevate sicure e fisicamente separate dai marciapiedi del centro città. L’obiettivo è rendere Tallinn una città “a 15 minuti”, il che significa che le strutture chiave – luoghi di lavoro, negozi, intrattenimento e istruzione – dovrebbero essere raggiungibili da qualsiasi parte di Tallinn entro 15 minuti a piedi o in bicicletta. Già oggi, tutti i tram di Tallinn funzionano al 100% con elettricità prodotta da fonti rinnovabili.

È inoltre in fase di progettazione un parco lineare sostenibile di 13 chilometri che promuove la coesistenza della biodiversità e dell’urbanizzazione. L’autostrada Putukäväil attraverserà nove quartieri, partendo da un’area forestale urbana per terminare in una città giardino, collegando le zone più periferiche di Tallinn con il cuore della città.

Nel corso del 2023, sono previsti diversi eventi dedicati alla sostenibilità: a partire dalla cerimonia di apertura a gennaio, un’esposizione sull’innovazione verde in autunno e un Green Expo internazionale a fine 2023. L’obiettivo è chiaro: avviare cambiamenti e nuove attività sostenibili, accelerare l’eco-innovazione e la crescita verde coinvolgendo cittadini e organizzazioni al fine di creare un ambiente di vita migliore per tutti.

Il riconoscimento a Tallinn come Green Capital è un punto a favore per il turismo estone. È importante presentare l’offerta green della destinazione ai visitatori e sensibilizzare le aziende ad analizzare le loro attività sulla base di principi sostenibili. L’Estonia dispone già di una serie di marchi di qualità che guidano nella scelta di prodotti e servizi ritenuti sostenibili, tra cui il marchio EHE e il marchio Green Key, in grado di valorizzare la natura locale e il patrimonio culturale, incoraggiando i viaggiatori a optare per scelte consapevoli, al fine di prendersi cura della natura circostante risparmiando risorse e consumando prodotti locali.

Qui la natura la fa da padrona, ma al contempo un rapido sviluppo tecnologico ha contribuito a rendere l’Estonia un paese digitale e uno dei più informatizzati al mondo, combinando con molta semplicità tradizione e innovazione, l’architettura del legno con gli ambienti tecnologici più innovativi.
