I primi nel volo: American Airlines guida l’industria aeronautica in un viaggio verso le emissioni zero basato su evidenze scientifiche

FORT WORTH, Texas – Durante l’estate scorsa American Airlines si è impegnata pubblicamente per sviluppare un obiettivo intermedio su basi scientifiche volto a ridurre le emissioni di gas serra (GHG), risultando la prima compagnia del Nord America a intraprendere questo percorso.

Il 19 aprile 2022 la compagnia ha annunciato con orgoglio che la Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi), un ente che definisce e promuove le migliori pratiche per raggiungere gli obiettivi di riduzione delle emissioni, ha approvato il traguardo che si propone American per il 2035 definendolo coerente con i livelli necessari per raggiungere gli obiettivi dell’Accordo di Parigi. Quest’importante riconoscimento rende American la prima compagnia aerea al mondo ad avere un obiettivo sviluppato su basi scientifiche, approvato dalla SBTi.

Il significato

Si definisce obiettivo su basi scientifiche quello che si allinea ai livelli indicati dagli studiosi del clima per mantenere il riscaldamento globale ben al di sotto dei 2 gradi centigradi. SBTi lo spiega ancora meglio: gli obiettivi con basi scientifiche forniscono un percorso chiaramente definito per la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra, verificando che gli obiettivi aziendali si allineino con ciò che gli studi più recenti ritengono necessario per prevenire i peggiori impatti del cambiamento climatico.

La SBTi ha analizzato il piano della compagnia confrontandolo con una serie di criteri rigorosi per valutarne la corrispondenza agli sforzi per limitare il riscaldamento globale ben al di sotto dei 2° centigradi rispetto ai livelli preindustriali. Quasi 3.000 aziende in tutto il mondo si sono impegnate a fissare obiettivi su basi scientifiche e poco più di 1.300 hanno ricevuto l’approvazione dalla SBTi.

Cosa significa per noi

L’obiettivo su base scientifica di American è quello di ridurre del 45% entro il 2035 l’intensità del carbonio, ovvero le emissioni di gas serra per passeggero e per merci che la compagnia aerea trasporta, rispetto ai livelli del 2019. Questo obiettivo intermedio servirà come punto di controllo sul percorso verso il 2050, anno in cui American mira ad essere una compagnia aerea a zero emissioni nette.

Nel fissare questo obiettivo, la compagnia si sta impegnando a ridurre sia le emissioni dirette, che sono principalmente riconducibili al consumo di carburante per jet utilizzato in volo, che le emissioni derivanti dalla produzione del carburante che la compagnia utilizza.

American si sta inoltre impegnando a ridurre del 40% le emissioni derivanti dalla produzione dell’elettricità che la compagnia aerea acquista (Scope 2) entro il 2035, basandosi sempre sui livelli del 2019. Le emissioni Scope 2 sono una piccola parte delle emissioni complessive di gas serra, ma costituiscono un obiettivo importante per ridurre gli impatti del riscaldamento globale.

Raggiungere l’obiettivo del 2035 richiederà un’attenzione continua e uno sforzo costante da parte di tutta la compagnia per mettere in atto la sua strategia di sostenibilità. Il successo dipenderà da una serie di fattori, alcuni sotto il controllo della compagnia come il rinnovo della flotta e l’efficienza operativa, e altri che non dipendono da American, come la disponibilità di carburante sostenibile per l’aviazione (SAF) e lo sviluppo di aeromobili di nuova generazione.

La responsabilità è una componente essenziale. Durante il percorso verso il 2035, la compagnia aerea terrà traccia e presenterà i progressi su base annuale nel rapporto ESG.

Il significato per l’industria aeronautica

American è la prima compagnia aerea al mondo con un obiettivo su basi scientifiche approvato, ma non sarà l’ultima. Attualmente 16 compagnie aeree di tutto il mondo – tra cui IAG, partner di American, e un paio di concorrenti statunitensi – si sono impegnate a fissare obiettivi con basi scientifiche. Nonostante le ardue sfide che tutte le compagnie aeree devono affrontare per ridurre le emissioni in un’industria ad alta intensità di carbonio, questi impegni sono una testimonianza della volontà collettiva del settore dell’aviazione di creare un futuro in cui l’impatto dei viaggi aerei sull’ambiente sia nettamente inferiore rispetto ad oggi.
