Alla scoperta della Francoforte di Goethe

Un itinerario alla scoperta dei luoghi dove ha vissuto il famoso scrittore tedesco, nella città più moderna della Germania

Sede di grandi aziende e banche, con uno degli aeroporti più trafficati al mondo, Francoforte sul Meno è una metropoli a tutti gli effetti. Ma, pur essendo in continuo sviluppo, rimane una città a misura d’uomo, da scoprire attraverso itinerari che portano alla scoperta della sua storia antica, ma anche del suo presente moderno. È un itinerario insolitamente letterario quello che porta alla scoperta della città di Francoforte sulle orme di un eminente scrittore: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Fu in questa città, oggi così moderna e proiettata verso il futuro, che il più grande autore e poeta tedesco trascorse i suoi anni formativi, passeggiando tra i vicoli della città vecchia e assistendo ai preparativi per le cerimonie di incoronazione dei re e degli imperatori tedeschi, molti dei quali furono poi immortalati tra le pagine delle sue creazioni letterarie.

Ripercorriamo la città in un itinerario che ci racconti qualcosa in più dello scrittore che nacque al nr.23 di Hirschgraben, il 28 agosto 1749.

Pesantemente danneggiata durante i bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, così come tutto il centro storico della città che è stato recentemente restaurato, la Goethehaus è stata poi ricostruita secondo il suo stile originario e oggi permette di conoscere l’ambito familiare dello scrittore. Dall’entrata si accede alle stanze del pianterreno che contengono collezioni private, come la collezione di ricordi che la madre ricevette dal figlio durante gli anni in cui questi risedette a Weimar. Se al piano superiore si trova la stanza dei ricevimenti, o stanza rossa, al secondo piano troviamo la stanza dove nacque il piccolo Goethe e una biblioteca, che custodisce 2.000 volumi, sui quali sia il padre che lo scrittore hanno a lungo studiato. Infine, non è possibile non visitare la famosissima stanza della scrittura, dove Goethe scrisse le sue prime opere, tra cui “I dolori del giovane Werther”.

Se si vuole comprendere meglio l’atmosfera della città di Francoforte che ha ispirato Goethe, è necessario fare un salto al Goethe Museum, che si trova proprio a fianco della sua casa. Al suo interno si possono ammirare una collezione di pitture e documenti riguardanti lo scrittore e numerose opere d’arte che, si dice, hanno influenzato i suoi scritti.

L’itinerario vi porterà poi al luogo che condivide il più grande legame con Goethe: il “Gerbermühle”, un ex mulino, scenograficamente situato sulle rive del fiume Meno, uno dei luoghi preferiti dagli abitanti di Francoforte in ogni stagione. In passato, il Gerbermühle era la residenza estiva del ricco banchiere Johann Jakob von Willemer: fu qui che il sessantacinquenne Goethe incontrò e si innamorò della giovane Marianne von Willemer, il cui amore venne eternizzato nel “Divano occidentale-orientale”. Oggi, il Gerbermühle ospita un accogliente hotel-ristorante, immerso in un bel giardino ombreggiato da castagni, con una splendida vista sul fiume Meno e sullo skyline di Francoforte.

Francoforte nasconde tra le sue strade antiche anche un altro posto legato allo scrittore: la Willemer-Häuschen, una splendida villa dove, si narra, che lo scrittore e Marianne si incontrarono nel 1814 durante uno spettacolo pirotecnico, Marianne divenne da quel momento la musa dello scrittore e, molti credono, spesso anche co-autrice di diverse opere.

Se vogliamo seguire le orme di un giovane, sconosciuto Goethe, bisogna visitare il quartiere di Höchst a Francoforte. ll vecchio quartiere di Höchst si presenta molto simile a quello di un tempo: le taverne tradizionali sulla piazza del mercato, la fortezza lungo le rive del fiume Meno, il castello del XVI secolo, la chiesa romanica di San Giustino del VII secolo e la fabbrica di porcellana di Höchst sono una piacevole passeggiata in un’ambientazione dal sapore storico. Possiamo immaginare un giovane Goethe che probabilmente si sedeva, in compagnia di amici, in alcune delle taverne che costeggiavano il mercato, o la fabbrica di porcellana di Höchst e ordinavano abbondanti piatti conditi con grüne soße. Narra la leggenda che fu proprio la madre di Goethe a inventare questo piatto della tradizione di Francoforte.

L’ultima tappa dell’itinerario fa fare un tuffo nella modernità: la strada intitolata a Goethe, Goethestraße è infatti la via dello shopping più esclusivo, dove passeggiare tra i negozi dei brand internazionali più conosciuti per assaporare fino in fondo il contrasto tra moderno e tradizione della città che ha dato i natali ad uno degli scrittori più conosciuti di tutti i tempi.
